5 Reasons why it’s 100% worth it to Travel Alone!

It’s a scary and daunting thought to travel all alone. When you have a travel buddy or a group with you, you can go through the good times and the bad times together, however travelling alone is something you should try at least once in your life!

Here are 5 reasons why its 100% worth it to travel alone…

1. You get to make all the decisions yourself

You don’t have to stress about ruining someone else’s trip or visiting places you really don’t want to go. Selfishly decide what YOU want to do and do it – it’s a great feeling!

2. It’s challenging, but rewarding

It’s scary at first, but taking that step outside your comfort zone and challenging yourself will make you a better, stronger person. Test your abilities and you’ll discover new exciting things about the world and about yourself!

3. You’ll make new friends along the way

Traveling with friends or family means you always have someone to chat and laugh with, however when you travel alone you’ll almost be forced to get to know the locals. Speak up at the local pub or the hostel you’re staying at and you could create new, amazing friendships.

4. There’s no need to look flawless

You’re alone so there is no one to compete with. If you want to dress up, then dress up, but you’ll be doing it for yourself rather than for someone else. On the other hand, if you feel comfortable wearing the same shirt for three days, no one is going to know.

5. It’ll instil confidence and independence

One of the best reasons to travel alone is that it allows you to become confident and independent in a way that you never knew you could. Some of us find sitting in a café, eating breakfast alone to be extremely uncomfortable and daunting, but once you’ve travelled alone you’ll have the confidence to handle anything that gets thrown your way.

Whether it’s getting to do whatever you like, making new friends across the globe or just proving that you are capable – travelling alone is 100% worth it and everyone should do it at least once!

This could be the hottest summer in South Africa, so it’s best to know these 15 tips on how to keep cool during the heatwaves…

>> Fill up a spray bottle with water and spray away the heat – use your main pulse points (inner elbows, behind ears and knees) to cool yourself down.

>> If you don’t have an aircon, DIY your own! Fill up a pan with ice, aim a fan at it and sit in front of it.

>> While the sun is out make sure to close your curtains or blinds – if the air is hotter outside, rather close your windows too.

>> Stay out of the direct sun as much as possible.

>> If you are going to be in the sun, always wear sunblock with a high SPF, anything over 50 is good.

>> Fill a bucket or two with cold water and soak your feet, otherwise take a cool shower or bath.

>> Keep yourself continuously hydrated – keep a close eye on your children and other family members and ensure they are also well hydrated.

>> Avoid drinking caffeine and alcoholic beverages, these will only dehydrate you more!

>> If possible, rather head downstairs and avoid the upper stories since hot air always rises.

>> Switch off your lights and appliances, such as your computer, when you are at home – they can raise the temperature indoors.

>> Steer clear of massive meals and protein-rich foods, they only increase the metabolic heat and warm your body up.

>> Try to rather eat fresh foods that do not require you to use the oven or stove.

>> Wear loose fitting clothes in light colours, darker colours can absorb more heat.

>> Get physical by having an early morning swim or do some yoga – do not attempt rigorous physical activities such as cycling, hiking or jogging.

>> Don’t forget your furry friends! Ensure they always have plenty of water and a cool place to relax.

Heatwaves aren’t surprising during the summer months, however it helps to know how to take care of yourself and others.
