Things to do in Cape Town for Heritage Day

Heritage Day or better known as National Braai Day is celebrated on the 24th of September every year in South Africa, it is a reminder to all of us to unite despite our differences, light a fire and prepare a great feast! I've put together a fun-filled guide to decide which Heritage Day activities you'll want to be a part of this year in Cape Town.

The Artscape Heritage Festival takes place from the 18th until the 20th of September; it combines a mix of dance, music and theatre performances to remind us of our unique, diverse nation.

Time: 14:00 – 21:00
Venue: Artscape Theatre
Price: R50 – R100

If you’re looking for something to do with the kids, this is the perfect way to spend your heritage day. An exciting potjiekos competition is being held on Wednesday the 24th and you are invited to enter the completion and see whose potjie comes out on top! Food and drinks will be supplied, not to mention some great live music.

Time: 09:00 until late
Venue: Jan Burger Sports Complex
Price: R150 – R250

Have a real party this Heritage Day and head over to Foreign Exchange on Wednesday 24th September, there will be a jammed pack line-up of different hip-hop acts and you can also expect to see a hilarious stand-up performance from Cape Town comic Shimmy Isaacs!

Time: 8:30 until late
Venue: Foreign Exchange Bar
Price: R25

Even if you’re not lucky enough to have an outdoor braai area Cape Town is packed with amazing spots to choose from, here are some favourites:

Whether you want to celebrate Heritage Day the simple way, or maybe something more extravagant, remember to gather your family, friends, maybe even strangers and get together over a weber, drum or a potjie pot and share in South Africa’s most favourite pastime - a good old braai.

Just arrived in Cape Town in time for National Braai Day? For fast, reliant transport, give Airport Shuttle a call and let them drive you to any Heritage Day happenings around Cape Town.
