5 Useful Tips for Travelling with your Pets

Pet owners who are going away for a summer holiday and plan on bringing their furry friends along for the ride need to know how to travel safely!

To give you complete peace of mind here are 5 useful tips for travelling with your pets…

Puppy pads. Even if your pet is fully grown and fully housetrained, travelling can be stressful for them and can make them a bit confused which can result in some accidents. Always make sure you’re prepared with some puppy pads.

Have them tagged. In case of an emergency it is vital that your pet is wearing a reliable, strong collar as well as tag with all your contact details.

Bring along all the necessities. When you’re travelling with your pet the last thing you want to worry about is filling their medication prescription or finding that specific brand of food. Avoid stressing and pack enough medication, food, etc. for the entire trip.

Go for a check-up before you leave. Before you embark on your journey be sure to take a quick trip to the vet and have a full check-up. If your pet usually gets anxiety from travelling, your vet should prescribe something for your pet.

Find pet-friendly accommodation. A lot of places do not accommodate pets, so it is important that you check ahead before you make any bookings. If you have a large pet, you may want to consider opting for a holiday home.

Have an amazing travel experience with your furry friend, all you have to do is plan ahead and keep these 5 useful tips in mind.

Did you know air travel does this to your body?

Air travel is generally a safe way to travel, and you may not know it but it is a lot safer to take a plane trip somewhere than it is to drive your car. However, you can still experience some unpleasant side effects when you’re 35 000 feet in the air.

- The low oxygen will probably give you a headache and make you feel sleepy
- Blood collecting in your feet and ankles can cause swelling
- You can get seriously dehydrated
- Shifts in the pressure in the cabin can make you gassy
- The air pressure changes cause your ears to pop
- Your sense of taste may be affected, making food taste dull
- Air shifts can cause toothache
- Air in the plane can cause your skin to lose moisture leading to dry skin and lips
- When your mouth dries out in the air, bacteria will grow which can cause bad breath
- Long distance flights throw off your circadian rhythm = JET LAG!
- You may not actually get sick at all

The 10 Commandments of Travelling by Air

There are probably a range of horrifying things you’ve experienced on a plane from security checks gone wrong to irritating passengers and uncomfortable seats.

It seems like a lot of people do not know the basics and common knowledge of how to follow simple rules when it comes to air travel.

Here are the 10 commandments that you should always remember:

1.  Thou shall always arrive at the airport early

Be sure to get to the airport early to avoid getting hurried or holding other people up, you don’t want to start off your trip by being super stressed and in a rush.

2. Thou shall not jump the queue

The plane will never leave without you, so do not push and shove your way to the front of the line!

3. Thou shall follow the hand luggage rule

Always obey the rule; you can only have one bag in the overhead compartment! Remember that you are flying somewhere not moving house.

4. Thou shall not fight for the armrest

In the war, for the armrest, there are no winners, so it’s best to work out a compromise so you both can share the arm rest without one person hogging it the whole time.

5. Thou shall remember that flight attendants are not slaves

The flight attendants work really hard to make you feel comfortable, so treat them with the respect they deserve and never give them a hard time!

6. Thou shall be a considerate recliner

Think before you push your seat back! Always check if there is enough space for the person behind you before you recline it back for the entire flight.

7. Thou shall not bring smelly food on the plane

Try your best not to bring any stinky food on-board with you such as eggs or fish. Also keep in mind that some food will cause you to make the smell, like garlic, cabbage, etc.

8. Thou shall not hog the bathroom

Keep it quick in the bathroom; do not spend 30 minutes in there redoing your hair while other people are waiting in the queue outside.

9. Thou shall lower the blind

When you have the window seat and you can see people are trying to sleep, lower the blind so they don’t get the blinding sun directly in the eyes.

10. Thou shall relax and have fun

Face it there is no point in complaining and finding fault with everything; just try to relax and enjoy the flight, your holiday will start soon.

Sleep peacefully on your next Flight with these 3 Tips

Travelling can be a stressful task, whether you are flying a short distance or flying to the other side of the world, it’s stressful all the same!

Short trips seem to be a little easier as they are over before you know it; however, the long flights seem to last for an eternity! Here are 3 important tips on how to get some proper sleep on those long journeys.

Plan your Trip to the Tee!

When planning, it is smarter to choose the non-stop flight. There is nothing worse than getting comfortable and drifting off to sleep and being interrupted only to change planes. However if your flight plan doesn't have a non-stop flight option, try choosing an option with the longest single leg as this will give you ample resting time and you’ll have more uninterrupted time to snooze.

Dress Comfortably!

Always remember that you are not entering a beauty pageant, you are about to sit in a seat for a lengthy period and there is nothing worse than being in clothes you can’t truly relax in. In your carry on it is a good idea to pack a pair of comfortable pajama bottoms and some woolly socks. When the plane has reached its cruising point and you are able to get up and walk around you should use this opportunity to climb into something a little more comfortable.

Prepare your body!

Keep hydrated during the day so you can avoid eating and drinking on the plane and adding unnecessary bathroom breaks. Most people will use sleeping pills and other prescription sleeping aids to help them get some rest; it’s recommended that you consult a medical professional before jumping to these extremes. Avoid caffeine and sugar; rather drink sips of water but not too much as you’ll be running to the restroom every hour.

If none of these tips help and you still find you are struggling to sleep, you can always rest. Try closing your eyes with some music on and lay back, more often than not you’ll land up getting some sleep in.

15 Tips on how to Beat the Heat in Cape Town this Summer

When your ice cream starts to melt profusely before you even have your first lick, you know it’s hot!

Image result for eating ice cream

This could be the hottest summer in South Africa, so it’s best to know these 15 tips on how to keep cool during the heatwaves…

>> Fill up a spray bottle with water and spray away the heat – use your main pulse points (inner elbows, behind ears and knees) to cool yourself down.

>> If you don’t have an aircon, DIY your own! Fill up a pan with ice, aim a fan at it and sit in front of it.

>> While the sun is out make sure to close your curtains or blinds – if the air is hotter outside, rather close your windows too.

>> Stay out of the direct sun as much as possible.

>> If you are going to be in the sun, always wear sunblock with a high SPF, anything over 50 is good.

Image result for applying sunblock

>> Fill a bucket or two with cold water and soak your feet, otherwise take a cool shower or bath.

>> Keep yourself continuously hydrated – keep a close eye on your children and other family members and ensure they are also well hydrated.

>> Avoid drinking caffeine and alcoholic beverages, these will only dehydrate you more!

>> If possible, rather head downstairs and avoid the upper stories since hot air always rises.

>> Switch off your lights and appliances, such as your computer, when you are at home – they can raise the temperature indoors.

Image result for eating fresh food

>> Steer clear of massive meals and protein-rich foods, they only increase the metabolic heat and warm your body up.

>> Try to rather eat fresh foods that do not require you to use the oven or stove.

>> Wear loose fitting clothes in light colours, darker colours can absorb more heat.

>> Get physical by having an early morning swim or do some yoga – do not attempt rigorous physical activities such as cycling, hiking or jogging.

>> Don’t forget your furry friends! Ensure they always have plenty of water and a cool place to relax.

Heatwaves aren’t surprising during the summer months, however it helps to know how to take care of yourself and others.

Use these 5 easy tips to make your flight less painful, after all you don’t want to arrive at your destination in a bad mood.

Tip No.1) Do your research and book a good airline, cheaper isn’t always better! In my opinion if you’re going to be on a long flight, it’s better to pay more and be comfortable.

Tip No.2) If you hate listening to other peoples conversations, babies crying and the planes loud engine - bring headphones with you! You can listen to music or watch a movie to cancel out the noise and keep yourself entertained.

Tip No.3) Sleeping on a plane can be very uncomfortable, so make sure to fasten your seat belt over your blankets so the flight attendants don’t wake you up to check if you’re strapped in. If you can buy a neck pillow, it can help to reduce head and neck ache.

Tip No.4) Food can be very expensive to buy on a plane, and most of it isn’t very tasty, rather make sure to pack yourself a few healthy snacks for your flight. Read about our 8 Genius In-Flight Dining Hacks.

Tip No.5) Occasionally get up and walk around the plane, it’s good for blood flow and can help kill a lot of time.

Here's Why Airport Shuttle is the Best Transport Option in Cape Town!

Most people who live in Cape Town or who have travelled to the Mother City before will agree that finding the right transportation that fits the job can bring up some problems.

But, does it really offer problems or have you just not been looking at the correct transport options?

Most traditional airport transfer shuttles will make their profits by planning multiple stops and picking up multiple passengers. Airport Shuttle in Cape Town offers airport transfer services on a pre-booked and private basis, meaning that Airport Shuttle drivers will NEVER pick up any other customers or drop them off along the way!

Using an airport transfer service such as Airport Shuttle means that your trip, whether it is to or from Cape Town International Airport will be safe, comfortable and you will arrive exactly on time. Airport Shuttle operates everyday throughout the entire year, all vehicles are safe, reliable, discreet and unbranded AND the professional, licensed drivers offer a trustworthy ride to your destination.

An additional transport option in Cape Town that is both efficient an easy to use and find is the MyCiTi transport network. While the MyCiTi bushes are a cheap way to get around the Mother City, they do not reach all the destinations and cannot take you exactly to the doorstep of your destination the same way an airport transfer vehicle could.

Image result for myciti cape town

The MyCiTi transportation service continues to improve and reach more destinations; however, it does not reach some of the best tourist destinations in and around Cape Town.

Uber is another transportation service that is widely popular and used by many people on a regular basis. However using Uber can sometimes feel like you are paying an arm and a leg, plus late pick-ups and drivers who choose to take longer alternative routes are occurrences that you’ll probably experience.

Do not waste your time and money on a transport experience that is not up to your standards when you could pay a similar price for a professional airport transfer service. If you choose Airport Shuttle in Cape Town or Durban, you’ll have full usage of our easy-to-use online booking service, where you can book your airport transfer with a professionally licensed driver that will get you where you need to be comfortably and on time.

Be aware that using a minibus taxi to transport you in and around the Mother City is at your own risk! Although these taxis are a part of the South African experience, they are a bit of a shock to tourists who are not familiar with how they work and how recklessly they drive.

Most minibus taxis will look like they have been through the wars and it’s not a surprise when you look at how they drive. Drivers often make up their own traffic laws, speed in and out of traffic, drive through red traffic lights and at peak hours their vehicles will be full of as many people as possible.

Although using a minibus taxi to get around the city of Cape Town isn’t expensive at all, tourists or people who are claustrophobic or nervous should probably opt for another form of transportation. If you’d prefer your ride to your destination not to involve more than 5 near-death experiences then it is best to choose another, safer option.

Airport Shuttle in Cape Town and Durban offers reliable airport transfer services that ensure you make it to and from the airport in a comfortable, reliable and completely safe manner!

Be Aware of these 3 Airport Scams!

It is a regular thing to hear stories as well as warnings about travel scams that take advantage of first time travellers and even experienced travellers. As a traveller, you need to be prepared and aware of what could lie ahead of you when you start your trip…

Related image

Airport Shuttle offers reliable, safe and comfortable airport transfer services in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. Local transportation is one of the most popular ways to get ripped off – book your airport transfer with Airport Shuttle to avoid becoming the next victim.

Here are 3 airport scams you need to be aware of!

> Taxi Scam

There is always a taxi or airport transfer scam waiting for you at the Airport! Some airport shuttles that wait at the airport for passengers are in fact unlicensed and some will fool you into paying an insane, inflated price that will burn a hole in your pocket. These airport transfer scammers will do anything to take you for granted, even taking you on a longer route to your destination.

These scams can happen anywhere, whether you’re in Cape Town, Johannesburg or Durban – do not put yourself at risk of financial loss or in a dangerous situation, book your airport transfer with Airport Shuttle today and you will get to your destination safely and at an affordable price.

> Overweight Luggage

This scam does not apply to all airports; however it is known to happen at a few of the less popular ones. Employees working at the airport, like the counter attendants who weigh your luggage, will fail to reset the scale before you put your luggage on and you’ll end up being over-charged for overweight luggage.

> Free Wi-Fi

Cyber criminals are always looking for easy ways to scam unknowing victims, and this is especially easy at the airport where internet users are always looking for a free Wi-Fi connection. Often hackers will set up a FREE Wi-Fi hotspot and once you connect to it, your private data and information will be stolen! Always be sure to switch off any automatic connections and do not connect to any hotspots that aren’t 100% safe and secure.

The best Packing Tips and Tricks

Whether you are going on a quick business trip or a week getaway to the beach with the kids – packing is something you have to do and it’s never easy!

Image result for packing suitcase

Here are a few tricks and tips that will ensure that your packing is easy and stress-free…

Roll your clothing – Rolling your clothes instead of folding them is a great way to compress your clothing and make sure they stay wrinkle-free.

Gift bags – If you’re bringing presents with you, rather wrap them up in a nice gift bag than use wrapping paper that will get damaged and torn.

Use a straw – Pack your necklaces, bracelets, etc. using a straw, this is a tried and tested way to stop chains from tangling.

Charge your phone the sneaky way – Did you know that most TVs have USB ports at the back that will charge your phone?

Heavy items at the bottom – To make sure that your suitcase has a balanced distribution of weight, put all your heavy belongings at the bottom of your suitcase.

Hair dryer – To avoid packing the extra bulk, call the hotel, guesthouse or B&B ahead of time and ask if they have one available.

Pack shoes smartly – Protect your clothing from any dirt that may be on your shoes by packing them inside your shower cap and then place them inside your suitcase.

Use an incognito browser – Did you know that airlines jack up their prices based on your web history? Avoid high prices by using an incognito browser.

Wear a jacket with pockets – There’s no need to get all fancy at the airport, but wearing a jacket that is both stylish and practical can help when you need a place to put your ID, passport, wallet, cell phone, etc.

Don't ruin your trip before you even go anywhere - use these packing hacks to avoid any unnecessary stress!

Air Travel Secrets you probably didn’t know

You may be someone who frequently travels by plane, whether it is for business or pleasure, however you probably haven’t heard of these air travel secrets before…

Image result for air traffic

#1 Airlines actually lie about their flight times. Have you been on a flight when it says it’ll be 2 hours long but as soon as you take off the pilot announces you’ll arrive in 1 hour 30 minutes? This is a tactic airlines use to improve their arrival statistics.

#2 There are almost 10 000 planes in the air right now. On average, there are about 9 728 planes in the sky at one time – check out the website FlightAware.

#3 That is not duct tape on the plane. It can be terrifying to look out the window and see what looks like duct tape holding the plane together. Don’t worry it’s actually high-tech Speed Tape, which can stay in place even at speeds over 500 mph.

#4 The shortest flight is only 1 minute long. Don’t expect any snacks to be served when you travel from Westray to Papa Westray, as it is the shortest commercial flight at just 1 minute long, however it can be flown in as little as 53 seconds.

#5 Air traffic controllers are paid well. They may be the people on the ground, but they are the ones making sure the planes don’t crash into each other!  The job requires intense concentration and is very stressful.

Did you know about these?

7 Safety Tips for Women who have to spend the Night at the Airport

Travelling is all about freedom and exploring the beautiful world around you, however it also sometimes entails spending unplanned time at the airport. So, one day you may find yourself in the situation where you have to spend the night at the airport.

Image result for sleeping in airport

If you are a female traveller you should consider taking some extra precautions when you are travelling, especially when you are travelling alone.

Keep these 7 safety tips in mind, even when you are not spending the night…

> Always know where the security is located. Walk around the airport so you can get an idea of the layout and know exactly where the nearest security station or guard is located.

> Find out what the local emergency number is. The numbers will change depending on the country you are in, so Google it or ask someone in the airport and save it to your phone.

> Never sleep alone. It might be nice to find a quiet area with no one around, but it also invites possible thieves to take advantage of the situation.

> Head to the areas that are brightly lit. This follows the same pattern as the previous tip, rather stay away from the dark corners and head towards the light – don’t forget to bring an eye mask.

> Always ensure that someone knows where you are. Whenever you travel alone send a quick message to a family member or a friend just to let them know where you are and that you are safe.

> Research the airport you’ll be spending the night at. Read reviews from other travellers who have stayed at the airport so you can know exactly what to expect.

> Trust your instincts! If something feels wrong to you then it most likely is. Even if it means spending a little extra money, rather stay at a hotel if you’re worried you’re not safe.

5 Helpful Tips to make Flying more enjoyable

Imagine you’re taking an amazing holiday trip abroad, the only thing in your way is the long plane ride ahead; do you want to enjoy your flight? Of course you do, flying can really suck at times! Use these tips to make your flight less painful, after all you don’t want to arrive at your destination in a bad mood.

Tip No.1) Do your research and book a good airline, cheaper isn't always better! In my opinion if you’re going to be on a long flight, it’s better to pay more and be comfortable.

Tip No.2) If you hate listening to other peoples conversations, babies screaming and the planes loud engine bring headphones with you, you can listen to music or watch a movie to cancel out the noise and keep you entertained.

Tip No.3) Sleeping on a plane can be very uncomfortable, so make sure to fasten your seat belt over your blankets so the flight attendants don’t wake you up to check if you’re strapped in. If you can, buy a neck pillow it can help you get more comfortable and reduces head and neck ache.

Tip No.4) Food can be very expensive to buy on a plane, and most of it isn't very tasty, rather make sure to pack yourself a few healthy snacks for your flight.

Tip No.5) Occasionally get up and walk around the plane, it’s good for blood flow and can help kill a lot of time.

The golden rule to enjoy your flight is to be positive and polite, don’t get upset with the flight attendants and always be polite to your fellow travelers, thinking positive thoughts can really make you feel better and improve your trip.

What Hangover Cures look like around the World

So you’re travelling to a different country for a bit of a well-deserved holiday. Whether you intend to party hard or not, it’s bound to happen. BUT what happens when you wake up the next morning with a terrible hangover and realise your usual remedy isn’t available?

We searched and found out what different people around the world consider to be the best hangover cure…

(Be warned these are pretty strange)

1.       Prairie Oyster – USA

Ingredients: Tomato juice, one raw egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and a dash of Tabasco.

Does it work? The tomato juice is rich in vitamin C and fructose, the egg has a lot of protein and the ability to step up your liver function and help your poor body break down those toxins faster.

     2.       Balut – Philippines

Ingredients: A poached fertilised duck embryo.

Does it work? It sounds grim, but eggs contain lots of cysteine which breaks down the hangover-causing toxin in the liver. I’d rather stick to bacon and eggs though!

     3.       Sparrow Droppings in Brandy - Hungary

Ingredients: You heard us!

Does it work? Well, this cure could actually do more wrong than right as you could be ingesting parasites, bacteria or diseases into your body. The brandy may postpone the alcohol withdrawal, but it’s best to steer clear of this one if you’re in Hungary.

     4.       Pickled Sheep Eyeballs in Tomato Juice – Mongolia

Ingredients: A pair of sheep’s eyeballs in tomato juice.

Does it work? The tomato juice will help the liver get rid of the alcohol from your system, but I don’t know how the eyeballs help!

     5.       Buffalo Milk – Namibia

Ingredients: Clotted cream, cream, two different rums and crème liqueurs.

Does it work? The cream will line your stomach and the excessive amount of alcohol will just postpone your hangover until later.

     6.       Sheep Lungs and Owl eggs – Ancient Greece

Ingredients: Sheep lungs and two owl eggs – hopefully cooked!

Does it work? Sounds pretty disgusting but back in the day this cheap protein probably worked wonders because of all the vital amino acids.

     7.       English Fry Up – UK

Ingredients: Fried bacon, eggs, sausage, toast, tomatoes, mushrooms sometimes with black pudding, hash browns and baked beans.

Does it work? The giant heap of protein, fat and salt will help your suffering liver to recover and replenish your lost electrolytes. Apparently a recent study showed that this is one of the best hangover cures!

What do you consider to be the best hangover cure? And does it actually work?

Are you a Selfish Airplane Passenger?

Yes, everyone has their own travel habits (some bad, some good) whether it’s bringing along your trusty neck pillow or munching on your homemade snacks. However, the most important factor of your entire trip is where you sit!

Sitting next to the window means you have the best views and a nifty place to lean, but the seat by the aisle means you have easy access to the bathroom and stretching capabilities. Recent studies have shown that choosing a window seat or an aisle seat actually reveals something about your personality…

In an interview with a scientist, it was revealed that those who choose to sit by the window are actually more selfish, and those who sit by the aisle are more reserved.

“Passengers, who favour the window seat like to be in control, tend to take an ‘every man for themselves’ attitude towards life and are often more easily irritable. They also like to ‘nest’ and prefer to exist in their own bubble.”

BUT

“Aisle passengers are often more sociable and definitely more amenable as people; they are also more likely to be restless fliers and less adept at sleeping on planes.”

There’s no studying showing what it is revealed about those who choose the middle seat – most likely because no one ever does!
